The Ice Time Project

The premise of why.....

I've been a hockey fan for over 50 years. I've been a fanatic about statistics and creating stories with that data for just as long.

I've come to love the web sites devoted to these pursuits;
  •  MoneyPuck.com
  •  Evolving-Hockey.com
  • CapFriendly.com
  • Hockey-Reference.com
  •  Hockey-graphs.com

The people who built, maintain and live and breath these sites on a daily basis have my eternal gratitude. Without them this would be nearly impossible to torture this much data and still have a smile on my face. 😃

My particular interest in Hockey Stats is ICE TIME.

Ice time is not even // Ice time is not fair // Ice time is subjective // Ice time is whimsical //
Ice time is earned, and lost//

Ice time is situational (event) dependent //
Ice time is situationally (event) independent //

Ice time is linear //Ice time is observable//Ice time is definable //Ice time is measurable
Ice time is predictive?
Ice time is measured in seconds
Ice time has a beginning (start) //Ice time has an end //
Ice time is not a marching band
Ice time is fluid
Ice time is rhythmic
Ice time is jazz
Ice time is risk/reward
Ice time is mercurial
Ice time is quicksand

Ice time is Thelonious Monk at Carnegie Hall
Ice time is Pollock

Ice time is freestyle
Ice time is impromptu
Ice time is karaoke
Ice time is a trap
Ice time is precious
The most common way of looking at Ice Time is by this equation
It "standardizes" the players stats so they can be compared to one another

Stat*60/TOI

  (*)multiplied by 60
(/)divided by
(TOI)  Total Ice time

These images (taken from Hockey-Reference.com) shows that all of these stats are based on Ice Time and the standardizing of that Ice Time.

I am going to discover a better way. I don't want to standardize their Ice Time to 60 minutes. I want the field to be "uneven" because Ice Time is not standardized it is subjective, mercurial, and whimsical....
There is a great page on
to help explain the glossary surrounding hockey stats in greater detail.
